Rafael de Lemos (Santo Domingo, August 9, 1951) is a Dominican painter and draftsman working in a surrealist language, with a solid prior background in design. A graduate in Physical and Mathematical Sciences (Colegio Santa Martha, 1969), he trained as a Designer and Interior Decorator at UNPHU (1973) and furthered his education internationally: Industrial Design at the Scuola Politecnica di Design di Milano (1974-1977), Parsons Evening School of Visual Arts in New York (1977-1979), Altos de Chavón (1983), and Escuela Massana in Barcelona (1991).
This design foundation underpins the compositional rigor of his artistic work. Since the late 1990s, he has built a practice centered on drawing and painting in a surrealist register, where the vegetal, animal, and human realms intertwine, with eyes, breasts, hands, and feet as a recurring symbolic vocabulary, reflecting on life, death, dreams, and the human condition.
His exhibition history includes sustained participation in the National Visual Arts Biennial at the Museo de Arte Moderno (editions XX, XXII, XXIII, and XXIV, between 1996 and 2007) and notable recognitions in drawing, including the Grand Prize "Paleta de Níquel" at the Bonao Art Biennial (2007). His work is part of the Eduardo León Jimenes Visual Arts Collection. In 2024, he presented the solo exhibition *Cartografías de lo Imaginado. Obra Gráfica* at ASR Galería (Santo Domingo).
